For upper comfort be prepared, you have to pay for like elsewhere in the world.Thats why you may determine the pricelevel of your journey yourself. My journey 1993 crossing Java(Indonesia) by train ,to Bali (Indonesia), as a passenger of the "Bromo Express" the best train Indonesia has to offer, was a lot more expensive than an ordinary standardtrain.Equivalent for example is the situation with rooms. If you do without aircon and be pleased with fan, youre surprised about the much lower price, clean and comfortable. Jakarta on Java, and capitalcity of Indonesia ,consisting from 16000 islands and the biggest muslimcountry in the world, offers the visitor on the first impression what other asianmetropoles .Do offer as well, pollution, noise ,chaos. But you may find some very interesting places to discover, for example the old sailingshipharbour in Oldbatavia, where bold humans who might come from a piratemovie,do transport by musclepower exotic wood, animals, cement from wooden sailingboats to land. Only insider do know from which of the16000 islands this old sailingboats do come from to swap and sell the Load. You do realize within Oldbatavias centre the EX Dutch colonialinfluence not only because of the "monument of independance". In the monumentsbasement is an impressive museum available, which is worth seeing if you re interested in documentations about this timeperiod. Old buildings built by the Dutch are close around and partly open for public. Java, very overpopulated and because lack of time,I did travell with just one stopover for 2days In Surabaya ,to Bali ,the only for my information hinduistic island of Indonesia. Great impressions to discover the islands Lembongan and Penida south offshore of Bali and participate in fishermens trip to reap "Seawitt" they do grow in fields on the bottom of quiete lagunas. Bali is a very nice island, but for my taste partly too touristic. It doesnt lack in anything(jeeps, cars ,motorbikes, restaurants, entertainment)are widely available. Regarding culture and landscape it never becomes boring on Bali.Almost every week the Balinese do celebrate at least one colour and flowerful ceremonie, which is worth to take part in it.I did watch people in trance, playing their role in ceremonies no western person may understand. Interesting villigas where you do find woodcarvingartists like Ubud, are a duty to visit. It is easy to discover the island by jeep, but be aware to be involved in dangerous trafficsituation.
